EVERYONE DEALS WITH CHANGE

The good, the bad, and everything in between.

It’s part of being human, and the truth is that some changes hit harder than others.

GOLDEN’s new single Just A Ghost touches right on that: the turning points that leave you feeling hollow, moments where something (or someone) becomes a memory, whether you’re ready or not. The West Virginia pop-punk/rock band captures that feeling of grief perfectly.

We caught up with the band to chat about the track and the sounds they gravitate towards as a band, and personally.

GOLDEN: “The song is about going through changes in life that cause you to have to leave behind things that were once very important to you. That could be a person or a musical situation or whatever, it just seems as we grow older, things kind of rearrange our priorities and force a shift that sometimes you have to take a hard look at.”

Just A Ghost has cool instrumentals with a pop-punk feel that we always gravitate towards, but there’s also an aspect to it that feels more mature than your average tune in the genre. Lyrically, the song feels emotionally heavy, tuning into the reality of change. Lines like “I found out what mattered most when you turned off my radio. I lost your signal, wound up on the wrong side of the year.” make you reflect after they hit you right where it hurts. When you actually sit with it, we’re pretty sure anyone can find themselves lost somewhere in their memories and the moments life throws at us

This release emphasizes that there will always be better days. You know that saying: "life is like a rollercoaster?" That's how we're taking this track. The good times come, the bad times follow, and it keeps on going. It’s all lessons learned, but with music that speaks to us like this, it reminds us that we are never alone. We appreciate that topics like this are being written about.

GOLDEN: Cody (vocals/guitar) came up with the original sketch of this song a long time ago, and it was the first thing we worked on when we started writing a new batch of tunes. I think when we start writing, we seem to get more and more stoked on the newer ideas as we go along, so this one kind of sat in the corner waiting for its turn for a while, but when we came back to it, we all really loved it, and I'm glad it made the cut to be recorded. Mikey especially knocked his bass tracks out QUICK for this song, and I think it gives it a great energy.

Yeah, the band shares some iconic pop-punk influences, but the coolest part? Each member is tuned into different areas of the music world. Together, those inspirations help make GOLDEN, golden.

TOP8 PICKS

GOLDEN: I think collectively we all love Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Cartel, and Blink-182. I think a bit of that bleeds into most of our songs. Separately, we all have very different tastes, but they all blend pretty well. I (Greg - vocals/guitar) love Elvis Costello, Cody loves Four Year Strong, Mikey loves Alkaline Trio, and Matt (McKinney- drums) loves Every Time I Die and other stuff that’s a little heavier. So we def have a good mix of things going on.

TOP8’S TAKE?

Just a Ghost is that song you’ll find yourself listening to when you need to let it all out. It’s catchy and everything you’d expect from a pop-punk band, with a different vibe that sets GOLDEN apart from the rest. This is only the beginning for them, and we’re adding them to our list of underrated bands. Once they’re in your rotation? They’ll refuse to leave.

What's next?

GOLDEN: We've got a couple more songs recorded that we are gonna be pushing out in early 2026, one of which has a feature from one of the guys in one of our favorite bands that we have grown up looking up to, so that’s very exciting for us (and incredibly vague for you). We’re hoping to do some more recording next year and keep pushing out tunes.

Our new single JUST A GHOST is out now, as well as another song we released in June GOTTA LET IT GO, and our 2023 debut EP RUNNING IN CIRCLES. You can find them wherever you get your music.
