TORONTO'S NAKEDBURN ARE BRINGING EMO BACK
IN FULL FORCE

& they’re giving us everything we miss about the 2010s scene:

Heart-wrenching melodies, post-hardcore energy, and songs with real weight. We spoke with the band before the drop of their latest single, “Pull Me Under” (out now), about the inspo behind the song.

Our take? Upon first listen, it feels emotionally heavy. The song is haunting, and it makes you question the line between dream and reality, both while listening to the track and while watching its music video. It’s like when you need something super badly, but you know it’s not good for you.

The song starts off chill, and that vibe continues throughout the entire listen, but there’s a contrast with heavier moments musically that brings a really cool aspect to the track.

FROM SOUND TO SCREEN

“Pull Me Under” creates mental visuals before you even hit play.

Vocalist Matt Guarrasi (who directed the music video) had a vision that came to life. Set in a dark forest, the video features a beautiful, ghostly girl throughout. This character mirrors the song’s pull, a hauntingly beautiful figure that represents love, loss, and what we can’t shake. (We’ve all been there).

The video plays on that late 2000s/2010s emo music video energy with its use of theme and creativity (but executed in a more modern, cooler way). It adds to the overall feel of the song as you watch and is everything you’d expect to accompany the track.

EMOTION MEETS IMAGERY

What inspired the music video?

“We wanted the visuals to feel otherworldly and ethereal, yet chaotic. That juxtaposition is what inspired our direction and what makes the song so compelling, as those opposing emotions coexist and clash throughout both the video and song.” The video literally becomes the song, with the ghostly figure bringing the lyrics to life: dream-like, tragic, and impossible to look away from.

How “Pull Me Under” defines their next era:

“This new single, 'Pull Me Under,' was a natural expansion of the NAKEDBURN sound. With our debut EP 'Drowning', we set out to lay the foundation for what NAKEDBURN is capable of, and for this single, it was simply taking all those elements and turning them up to 11. As artists, we're always looking to subvert all expectations and keep things interesting. Writing and releasing 'Pull Me Under' was a way to just carry on the back of the momentum we had after releasing the EP earlier this year."

Safe to say this track makes our TOP8

This band has the total package.

They have extremely well-done visuals, the ability to put you into your feelings, awesome instrumentals, and they feel current while taking inspiration from the sounds of past decades.

They make us feel like we never left those eras. This drop is a huge move for NAKEDBURN and where they’re headed. It further proves their talent, creativity, and ability to release killer tracks. They have no desire to slow down, with more music and shows lined up for 2026.

If “Pull Me Under” is a sign of what’s to come, we’re ready, and you should be too.
